funky examples: vertical gardening: make a column out of chicken wire and tar
paper ( or something with no toxics) about 14" in diameter, maybe 3' high or
so. Fill a 4" diameter pipe with sand and stones in middle, add good soil in
surrounding area, pull out pipe. Cut 3" slits thru wire and paper in a spiral
pattern around outside, stuff seedlings into slits.Water thru sand and
stones, can be placed on sidewalks, balconies or roofs. Should get 40 or 50
plants in there. Dimensions are fairly abritrary, experiment. Mine are working
well.
2. Heat your house to 60 degrees F. Attach a tube from the back of the
house, dig a trench, preferably 30' from house to back. Put a small fan, run
by a small photovoltaic cell in a cubicle. Fan will blow air thru tube
underground into house.
These are just 2 cheap and simple, funky ideas. The focus as a contingency
for y2k worst-case scenerio should be to harvest these kind of ideas thru the
internet to make them easily available, so that neighborhoods and individuals
can become truly self-sustainable by 2000. Big y2k websites need to make this
a focus, so it can happen.
