The human feelings we felt towards the catastrophe that befell US citizens were clearly stronger than those we may have against the US as a result of its biased policies.

This attitude does not include hypocritical statements made by those who feared the 'wounded lion', 'master of the jungle'. We, the Palestinian people, managed to balance our feelings towards the catastrophe whose perpetrators are unknown but whose reasons are clear, with those feelings we have towards the US that fully supports Israel's aggression against us.

Sharon's attempt to abuse the ensuing situation for his own wicked and embarrassing ends, failed when the US recognized its need to form a strong alliance that includes many of the countries that Sharon would accuse of being terrorist.

Not only did the attack against the US lead to the death of thousands of people, but it also undermined the political power of a super power whose symbols of economic and military strength, the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, were destroyed.

The massive operation showed the failure of the US to protect itself when those it oppressed reacted to the policies of hegemony and discrimination it has been practicing throughout the world.

Technology and all methods of combating terrorism failed to help the US avoid the inevitable explosion. Some of the sensible people in the US realized the need to reflect on what caused the tragedy.

Mr. Norman Finklestein of the University of De Paul talked of the misery and intimidation the US government has sown in many countries such as Lebanon (1982), Iraq (1991) and recently in Serbia. In his view, the US is now reaping what it has sown, especially the mass killings it committed for no reason.

Finklestein added that the US as the only super power felt that it would pay no price for all the acts of arrogance acts it has committed. The list includes among other things its withdrawal from Durban conference, withdrawal from the Kyoto agreement, and its attempt to nullify the anti-Ballistic Missiles Pact.

According to Finklestein, the US should reconsider its position since no party is immune to retribution. The US Administration turned a deaf ear to this type of thinking and acted arrogantly when the Council of Foreign Relations convened in an emergency session.

The meeting drew a comparison between what happened in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the tragedy of September 2001, as an indication of their intention to go to war.

The excessive use of power replaced the security failure. Forty billion dollars were devoted to the coming war and thousands of reservists were called up.

And the idea of an international alliance against terrorism started to take shape. The alliance is supposed to include the NATO countries in addition to some moderate ones in Asia and the Middle East. The US adopted a new policy according to which countries that do not support the US are against it. The undersecretary of the Defense Department, Paul Wolfowitz, insisted that the US would wage a lasting and broad campaign against terror.

As a member of the Zionist lobby, he is of the opinion that the US should attack Syria, Iran and the Palestinian people - the enemies of Israel and the US. Collin Powel, however, prefers a surgical military operation.

Amid this international idiocy that is being directed against an unspecified enemy, Israel continues its occupation as the clearest form of terrorism. Ethnic cleansing, confiscation of land, killing people, imposing closure and assassinating activists and political leaders are examples of the policies Israel adopted during the last year.

The US Administration that provided the necessary diplomatic protection especially at the UN Security Council supported these acts. In its attempt to forge the new alliance, the US wants to keep Sharon's violence to a minimum to make it less embarrassing for that alliance.

However, Arab and Muslim countries should know how to use the current developments for their own advantage. To do so, they need to work out a definition that does not serve the interests of the US Administration and the Zionist lobby.

Both seek to put an end to the Intifada and impose Israel's hegemony on our area. The Palestinian people warn against the Zionist plot that aims to liquidate the Intifada as a legitimate form of resistance against the Israeli occupation and the construction of settlements.

The continuation of the Intifada does not contradict the principle of going back to the negotiating table. Negotiations should be based on clear terms of reference including basically the UN resolutions relevant to the Palestinian issue. Sponsorship should not be confined to the US; the UN and the Security Council should play an effective role.

The Intifada and the support of the Arab and Muslim nation should continue to accompany any future negotiations. Arabs and Muslims have only two options: either to have the power of unity and the justice of their cause to maintain their dignity and protect their civilization, or to have the weakness of disunity and therefore cause their civilization to collapse.

Therefore, any country that approaches the US without coordinating its position with the rest of the Arab and Muslim world will weaken our stance for the sake of its own interests.

A unified Arab and Muslim position on what constitutes world terrorism will make the US realize that it cannot mobilize all countries against ghosts or individuals it cannot indict.

The US should not be allowed to ignore the assassinations and daily killings in Palestine being carried out by a real murderer, Sharon, who is still at large. Imposing our priorities on the new alliance will help protect the Palestinian people who are being targeted by the US and the Zionist entity.

Both parties should understand that calling for quiet and stability cannot veil their true intentions. Such a tactic may become a strategy unless the US and Israel are pressured into acting upon international resolutions pertaining to the Palestinian issue.

The Intifada as a legitimate form of resistance should make clear the distinction between two things: the right of any people to fight against occupation, on the one hand, and atrocities against civilians as what happened in the US on September 11, 2001, on the other hand. Similar atrocities were committed in Palestine during the last fifty years.

The following locations bear evidence of the atrocities that were carried out by Sharon: Qibya, Nahalin, and Qalqilya in the 1950's; al-Samou' in the 1960's; Gaza in the 1970's; and Sabra and Shatila in the 1980's. Sharon never let a decade go by without committing an atrocity.

But the master of terror in the third millennium is still at large in the company of Liberman and Ze'evi who call for the transfer of Arabs to build the 'Greater Israel'.. Arab and Muslim countries should not allow themselves to be blackmailed by the US Administration that categorizes countries that stand against its biased policies as terrorist ones.

The new definition of terrorism should explicitly force Israel as a strong ally of the US to acknowledge its responsibility for the injustices it has inflicted on the Palestinian people. Otherwise, the tyranny based on the US definition of terrorism will grow limitless. Until Sharon's terror fades away and justice prevails, and until our goals are achieved, the Palestinian people will continue to solidify their internal unity. Revolution until victory.
