I was looking for this short story of Bruce Sterling through
AltaVista, but the only item I could find was his June 1996 lecture in
Vancouver entitled "Unstable Networks."  Very interesting, but not the
topic you mention.

Tom, can you give us the gist?  Or the URL that displays the story?
