PLATFORM FOR ACTION (PFA):
In addition to alternative country reports (see GlobalNet #130), NGOs are
engaged in various sectoral monitoring and assessment activities. The
following are selected examples:

he NGO Working Groups on The Girl Child/NGO Committee on UNICEF is
preparing a follow-up global assessment to its 1998 report describing
progress made by governments in implementing recommendations on The Girl
Child in the PFA (Section L). Information in this report will be based on
reports from working groups in 90 countries. In January 2000, the working
groups are planning a 2-day on-line dialogue with young girls on their
perceptions of progress made on implementing the PFA in collaboration with
UNICEF's Voices of Youth. For further information, contact:
<sfriedman@unicef.org>

omen's media and information networks as part of the programme of
WomenAction 2000 are undertaking an analysis of the implementation of the
women and media section of the PFA (Section J) using: 1) government
responses to the UN questionnaire; 2) national plans of action; and 3)
alternative country and/or Section J reports as available. For further
information, contact: <wimnet@gn.org>.

he Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)/Women in Politics, has sent a
questionnaire to national parliamentarians to gather information on women's

to the PFA. It is hoped that the results will become part of the UN review
and appraisal. For further information, see IPU's web-site at:

WomenWatch, the web site dedicated to UN activities in support of the
advancement of women, began a series of on-line Working Groups on the 12
