Warmest greetings !

It  is  almost a year after Beijing+5.  Certainly there have been  
many developments on our efforts to advance the Beijing Platform 
for Action and  improve the conditions of  women .

In this regard, may we invite representatives of  non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) and government national machineries (GOs)
involved in direct national  monitoring of  the  Beijing Platform for
 Action (BPFA) and the Convention for the Elimination of 
 All Forms  of   Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) .
to the Asian  Women's  Conference   on  Strengthening Gender
 and Development (GAD )  thru the CEDAW and the BPFA ,  
16-18  June 2001 , Chaophya Park Hotel, 247 Rachadapisek Road, 
Bangkok,  Thailand.

We are  specially inviting the participation of  national delegates 
 attending the  Asia-Pacific Summit of Women Mayors and 
Councillors  scheduled 19 to 22 June 2001,  Phitsanulok, Thailand
 organized  by the United Nations Economic and Social  Commission
 for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

Registration Fee for the conference is $  200  ( two hundred US dollars )
 per participant  to cover  board and lodging for two nights during 
the conference and the conference kit /materials. Without hotel
accommodations, registration fee is US dollars fifty / US $ 50.

We envision  the conference to be simple and bare  of  
frills but substantial in content. It will be a coming together 
of  representatives stakeholders from both government and NGOs
directly involved on the ground in monitoring the Beijing Platform
 for Action and the CEDAW. 


We are sorry we can not provide funding to participants.
At the moment, we have minimal funding only for the documentation
of the proceedings of the  conference.

All participants have to request funding from their own donors
and sponsors.

Participants:

1. Stakeholders at the country level  involved in 
    the implementation of the  Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA)
    and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of  
    Discrimination Against  Women (CEDAW)  ;

2. Representatives  of  national machineries, GAD focal points 
   women  local government officials ; and

3. Representatives  of  regional and international  organizations.

  
Conference  Objectives:

1.  To  share updates on  regional initiatives to 
    monitor the implementation of the Beijing Platform
    for Action and advance the CEDAW in the  
    Asia Pacific Region,  one year after Beijing +5 ;

2.  To   encourage discussions  on  gender and 
    development (GAD ) as  a  policy and program of  
    national and local governments  in the 
    Asia-Pacific Region including  identification/  
    initial  assessments of national commissions, 
    national advisory committees, gender budgeting, 
    and gender accounting;

3.  To  share experiences and insights on  
    national efforts to promote the rights approach
    to women's empowerment which challenge  
    conservative and reactionary institutions and
    practices discriminatory  to women; 

4.  To  initiate discussion on  gender and 
    development with reference to the Beijing 
    Platform for Action and the CEDAW and with   
    special focus on institutional mechanisms 
    that can influence policies, mobilize support
    and monitor  accountability; and 

5.  To   formulate  recommendations , strategies
    and actions  to  support and advance  gender 
    and development , the  Beijing Platform for Action 
    and   the  CEDAW in the Asia-Pacific Region with 
    special focus on identifying  indicators  
    pertinent to local governance  and  linked 
    to  accountability/ reporting mechanisms of
    the CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action.

panel  discussions and workshops moderated  and

to the Asia-Pacific Summit of Women Mayors and 
Councillors   19 to 22 June 2001, 
Amarin Lagoon Resort, Phitsanulok, Thailand. 
The Summit is organized by the United Nations
 Economic and Social Commission for Asia 
and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in collaboration
 with  other  United Nations  agencies  and
 international organizations.
