ムミア・アブ・ジャマルを含む111名(112名との情報もあり)にのぼる死刑囚が、現在ハンガーストライキ中です。これは、昨年３月５日までにペンシルバニア州矯正当局が発表したSCI Greene刑務所の規則の変更に抗議するためのものです。
従来は２時間の面会時間が認められていたのに、それが半分の１時間に減らされました。囚人の家族の多くはフィラデルフィアに住んでおり、片道６時間かけて面会に来ても、１時間しか会えません。
私物の所持についても、所定の大きさの箱（この大きさについてはまだ規定が決まっていない）の中に、法律関係、宗教関係、勉学用、写真、娯楽関係などのすべての本を収めるように制限されました。(日本の刑務所・拘置所で現在すすんでいる私物所持制限と似ています)
売店での食料品の自弁購入ができなくなりました。
電話は週に一回、15分のコレクトコールのみに制限されました。
衣服も、現在のものに代わって、ピンストライプ（細い縞模様）の入ったつなぎ服に替えられる。これは、RHU, や lockdown units と同じになるということ。
当局者はテレビもラジオも許可すると言っているが、アンテナが取り払われ、したがってテレビもラジオも視聴できなくなっているという情報もある。
時計を取り上げられた、とか聖書を取り上げられた、と訴えている囚人もある。 詳細は、このメールを書いた人が後に調査してさらにポストする、と書いていますので、待ちたいと思います。

Up to 111 death row prisoners, including Mumia Abu-Jamal, are on a hunger strike to protest the latest SCI Greene, Waynesburg, PA changes to Capital Case Practices.
The Department of Corrections in Pennsylvania have issued new regulations as of March 5, 1997.
Visits: No longer are the death row prisoners allowed two hour visits >from people on their visiting lists ? it is reduced to one hour visiting. Wives, children and mothers and other friends are severely restricted by this move. Most prisoners come from Philadelphia which means a six hour travel each way for a one hour visit.
Property: Now consists of one official issued box (size still to be determined) to contain ALL of the following: legal, religious books, educational books, photographs and recreational reading materials.
Commissary: No food may be allowed in the cells ? no purchases of food >from the commissary.
Telephone calls: one collect, fifteen minute call per week. Attorney and emergency calls as per DC-ADM 818
Clothing: their present outward clothing is taken away and they are being issued the pin-stripe coveralls (the same as RHU, and lockdown units)
Although the new directives say "Televisions and radios will be permitted" according to two letters received by pen pal children, antennas are being removed and therefore the prisoners are denied access to programs on the TV and radio.
Another prisoner says his watch was taken, and another that his Bible was taken away.
