Internet and Electronic Publishing Services
The IGC Networks are directly connected with the Internet and its vast range
services, including ftp, telnet, gopher, SLIP/PPP, e-mail and news. IGC has
developed a graphical user interface, IGC InterACT, that simplifies
connecting to the Networks and the vast range of Internet tools and resources.
IGC InterACT is currently available for both Windows and Macintosh computers.
(With appropriate configurations and settings, however, any SLIP/PPP software
may be used to connect to the IGC Networks.) IGC currently offers a range
of electronic publishing services (prices summarized below). For more details
about how your organization can benefit from electronic publishing, please see
our Guide to Electronic Publishing.
- Dial-up Internet Access (SLIP/PPP) -- SLIP/PPP allows people without direct connection to the Internet to dial into it, even through x.25 or public data networks like SprintNet. SLIP and PPP make many Internet programs usable by IGC Network members, including Netscape, Fetch, Eudora and many more. E-mail support@igc.apc.org for information on how to connect to IGC via SLIP/PPP.
There is no additional charge for IGC members accessing their accounts via SLIP/PPP.
- Usenet news -- In addition to the IGC-specific issue-based and organizational-sponsored conferences available only to IGC Members, IGC imports Usenet newsgroups so that IGC members may participate in Internet-wide discussions on a range of issues and topics, read by thousands of people worldwide.
There is no additional cost for accessing Usenet news.
- Gopher Services
Gopher is a menu-drive, text-only tool used for finding and presenting information on the Internet. While some people think Gopher is on its way out, the entire world does not yet have access to the WWW. If you need to reach people in developing countries, or where the access to the Internet is limited or costly, or if you need to reach people using lower-end computers and slower modems, Gopher may still be the appropriate technology for your communications needs. IGC continues to maintain an extensive Progressive Gopher from which your organization can reach hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people for a very low cost. (For IGC Members using the text-based interface, IGC's Gopher is available by selecting (i)nternet from the main menu.)
Costs to set up your own Gopher space:
$30 setup per gopher menu;
$50 per quarter ($200 per year).
Gophers with their own domain names (see below) are
$100 per quarter ($400 per year).
- World Wide Web -- If you're reading this, you know what World Wide Web is. In addition to the Progressive Directory that IGC maintains, IGC can make custom WWW "pages" for putting your organization's information out on the Internet. See the 1994 Environmental Scorecard as an example of an WWW page that IGC put together for the League of Conservation Voters.
Costs to set up your own WWW space:
$50 per quarter (up to 5 HTML documents);
$150 per quarter (5-15 documents);
$300 per quarter (unlimited number of HTML documents).
Includes five megabyte of storage; additional storage is
$2 per megabyte per quarter.
Also included: weekly "hit" reports (upon request);
support of CGI scripts, secure transactions,
password access, full-text searching. Setup charges may apply.
- Telnet -- IGC Network members may telnet to any other Internet system directly from their IGC account. Members with accounts on other Internet sites may also telnet into the IGC Networks from their other Internet account.
There is no additional charge for Telnet service.
- FTP -- FTP space is a storage place on the IGC's sytem (or on another system) from which anyone on the Internet can pick up files using a program called "ftp" (file transfer protocol). For a relatively low annual fee, IGC Members can make non-text (or text) files available to anyone on the Internet. Or members can access information from other FTP sites via IGC's (i)nternet command.
Cost to setup your own FTP space:
$200 per year
- Internet Mailing Lists (Majordomo) -- In addition to being able to subscribe to any of the existing internet-wide mailing lists available (for no charge), IGC members may set up their own Internet mailing lists.
Cost to setup your own Majordomo List: $50 setup fee.
No monthly fee for lists with less than 500 names.
- Auto-Reply Mail Messages -- E-mail addresses that return a prepared text file to the sender. Great for responding to requests for general information about your organization.
Costs: First message is free; $25 for each additional auto-reply message.
Bulk discounts available.
- Organization-Sponsored Electronic Conference (aka "forum" or "newsgroup") -- May also be linked with Internet Mailing lists and Gophers.
$30 one-time startup fee. No additional charges.
No charge for using existing public IGC or Usenet conferences.
- Domain Name Service -- Expand your visibility by having your organization's acronym always attached to your e-mail address; also gives the impression that your organization hsits own home onthe Iternet. Your email address becomes: yourname@yourOrg.org.
Cost:
$50 setup fee only.
