Training and Information Center for NPO ( TICN )

Our Objectives:

In the last ten years, the number of nonprofit organizations has increased steadily in Japan. Nonprofit organizations (NPO) are fundamentally run by citizens who have missions and goals to address problems in the community.

In order to establish a solid NPO sector, we need more people to get involved, especially those who have the desire to do something positive and make a difference, as well as possessing good management and problem solving skills.
In order to establish equal relationships between the public sector, private sector, and nonprofit sector, each sector needs to be recognized as having its own identity and its own role in our society. Equality and openness are the keys to the transition to a civil society. Therefore, what we at the Training and Information Center for NPO are aiming for is to develop the human resources in the NPO sector by providing good training programs and management skills for people in this sector.

What we do:

Our main goal is to provide various management programs for the NPO sector because we think what is urgently needed in the present NPO sector is to train and develop human resource.
We work cooperatively with the private sector, by providing consultation on their social contributions. As well, we plan and execute government projects in partnership with the Japanese government.

We are located in Kokubunji, which is in the middle of Tama area in Tokyo. We would like to be the Support Center of this area by providing consultation on starting new organizations, how to run these organizations effectively, and promote the exchange of useful information.

Our programs:

Program 1: "NPO as a new way of life."

This program is for those who are thinking about setting up a new NPO by themselves, especially those who wish to make the NPO their new careers. This program addresses the concept of the "Global Village" in which we are all citizens who must take responsibility for our actions in accordance with our missions and goals. This is facilitated by the creation of personal mission statements.

Program 2: " NPO - Getting off the ground and taking to the sky."

This program is for those who are already in the NPO sector, especially executive directors and NPO board members. We will learn effective management skills such as using the new NPO registration, fundraising, the basis of NPO management, and the evaluation of the paradigm.

Program 3: " NPO - Networking"

This program is for those in the NPO sector who are trying to build a new kind of network in order to establish a solid intermediary. We will learn and put into practice effective and efficient methods of information exchange on a grass roots level to facilitate growth and development of individual NPOs and the sector as a whole.

These are our program themes for this year. We will provide approximately 4 to 6 seminars and workshops on these topics this year. By the end of the fiscal year, we are planning to hold a symposium and evaluate the whole year's programs (tentatively scheduled for February of 1999).

Our programs are creative as well as practical, based on the 10 years experiences on training and workshops for various organizations including corporations and government sectors. We are the first nonprofit intermediary organization for NPO, specialized in developing the human resource in NPO sector in Japan.
Our potential for growth is tremendous, as the need for training and development is profound.
