August 10, 1998

Dear Friends:

Eighteen prodemocracy activists, including Ellene Sana of People's Council for International Solidarity (PCISP) and Peace and PHILSETI and Sonny Resuena of Task Force Detainees-Phil., were arrested in Rangoon, August 9, for distributing leaflets containing the following message: We are your friends from around the world.
We have not forgotten you.
We support your hopes for human rights and democracy 8888 - Don't forget - don't give up.

This 18-member Multinational Peacemaking Team went to Burma to commemmorate the 10th anniversary of the August 8, 1988 (8888) people's uprising calling for an end to military rule in solidarity with the Burmese people. It will be recalled that a crackdown followed, claiming thousands of lives.

The Burmese State Peace and Development Council charged that the group's action was "inciting unrest". To date, the Philippine Embassy in Rangoon could not get information about their situation and exact whereabouts.

A protest picket shall be held tomorrow before the Myanmar's Embassy in Makati and a press conference the following day.
