Dear friends,

I'm writing this e-mail to ask you for your help. As you might know, three Japanese people are being held hostage in Iraq (7 Koreans and one British as well).

The kidnappers say that unless the Japanese Self Defense Forces withdraw from Iraq within three days, they will kill all three hostages by burning them alive and cutting them into pieces. These three are peace activists and humanitarian volunteers who have been really helping Iraqi children who are suffering from depleted uranium (DU) contamination and/or other effects of the war.

Mr. Noriaki Imai has been working to stop the use of DU and is against the war and occupation. He just graduated from high school and went to Iraq to help Iraqi children suffering from the effects of DU.

Ms. Nahoko Takato is a humanitarian volunteer who has been helping Iraqi street children who lost their parents and homes in the war. Her work has been very much appreciated by the Iraqi people, and has woken up many Japanese to the real situation in Iraq.

Mr. Soichiro Koriyama is a freelance photographer who is working with Imai. They went to Iraq to write an article for the Asahi Weekly magazine.

It is true that in Iraq people are dying daily. Still, I'd like to ask your help, as the Japanese government and some Japanese right-wingers are beginning to take a "we don't yield to terrorism" position on the crisis, subtly or explicitly, while hiding the fact that the U.S.-led invasion was a violation of international law and that the dispatch of the Japanese "Self Defense" Forces is a clear violation of Japan's constitution. I'm really worried that this chauvinistic mood will lead not only to the death of the three hostages but also to more deaths in Iraq by intensifying suppression under the criminal occupation. This will backfire (as it has, in fact, already ...). I need your help to maintain a space for rational debate in Japan, and to combat the right's chauvinistic lies and fantasies.

So I'd like to ask you to take a bit of time and send an e-mail or a fax to:

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi:
FAX: +81-3-3581-3883
koizumi@mmz.kantei.go.jp

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi
FAX: +81-3-5501-8430
goiken@mofa.go.jp

Japanese Defense Agency Director General Shigeru Ishiba
FAX: +81-3-3502-5174
info-iraq@jda.go.jp or info@jda.go.jp

Please point out something like:

(1) The U.S.-led war on Iraq was a criminal act from the beginning;

(2) The dispatch of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces has only worsened the situation;

(3) Withdrawing the Self-Defense Forces is just; sticking to the illusion that they were sent to Iraq to provide "humanitarian aid" rather than as a political move to help bolster the international image of the U.S. occupation will only make the situation worse;

(4) The Self-Defense Forces should be withdrawn immediately, not only to save the three hostages, but also to work for justice and a peaceful tomorrow.

plus whatever else you want to put in. Sorry to bother you. Please feel free to distribute this email to your reliable friends.

Best regards,
