Russian Military intel update: War in Iraq, April 7 (morning)
07.04.2003 [19:14]

The situation on the US-Iraqi front during the morning-night on April 7th was characterized by extreme fierceness of combat. During the night-morning the coalition units continued to encircle the city from west and east. The 2nd brigade of the 3rd Mechanized Division, as was revealed before, after a five-hour march reached the northern approaches of Baghdad and occupied the region bordering to the strategic bridge Salah-Khasan, but was unable to seize the bridge itself because of a heavy missile and artillery barrage. Up to 10 men were killed, at least 20 wounded. In the morning the brigade lost its communication center destroyed by a tactical Iraqi missile.

From south-east the American marine units that had repeatedly tried to seize a strategic bridge across the Diyala, as we assumed before, during the night advanced to the eastern suburbs of the New Baghdad and by the morning tried to take over bridges near the “Rashid” airport. In this violent conflict the bridges were destroyed by the Iraqi artillery and the marines sustained losses. According to intercepted radio communications up to 5 marines were killed, at least 12 wounded. 3 APC and 1 tank were destroyed.

Last night on the right bank of the Tigris in the Al-Mansur region American commandos numbering up to 200 men landed in a block of government buildings. Apart from that, fighting squadrons landed on two government residences in this region. The goal of the operation was to capture top officials of Saddam Hussein’s administration. Almost immediately the airdrop was detected and engaged. In order to unblock the commandos at 7am an enforced tank battalion from the 1st brigade of the 3rd Mechanized Division entered the city and after a two-hour fight was able to break to the Haifa street along the Kadissiya roadway and partly reached the bank of the Tigris. This movement turned out unexpected by the Iraqis and met no resistance at first. But in the region of the government quay the American forces confronted with organized Iraqi defenses. After 3 hours of battle the commandos got to the American positions and the whole column fell back from the city.
The American losses total up to 10 men killed, 20 wounded and 10 missing. Up to 3 tanks and 3 APC were destroyed.
The commandos only examined a few government buildings in a hurry. All of them were found empty and no captives were taken.
The tolls of the Iraqi side during the day were up to 150 men killed and about 200 wounded. They lost up to 5 tanks and 8 guns.

By the afternoon Iraqi actions became more confident.
There is information that one of yesterday’s air strikes severely damaged one of their communication and control centers and currently the Iraqi command has to control their units using VHF-stations and envoys which delays battle-orders and commands.
Today the American command had to admit that the fighting potential of Baghdad defenders is “fairly high” and the rivals show no sign of demoralization.

Full update will be published tonight.

Khilafah Is coming
by Anonymous on 07.04.2003 [19:33]

This crusade against Iraq is part of the so-called on going “war on terror”, which by all accounts is war on Islam and in particular political Islam. Both Britain and America long ago realised that the West has lost the intellectual battle to convince the Muslim masses of western civilisation. Having created multiple Muslim countries from the dismemberment of the Uthmani Khilafah after the 1st World War, they threw everything at the Muslims to make them forget about political Islam. In some places they adopted harsh repression; in other places they adopted a purely nationalist or patriotic agenda. When these failed they attempted to give alternate political groupings which were based on kufr, like the Arab League or the Islamic League. They even eventually dabbled with democracy in some Muslim lands which worked against them completely as Muslims voted for Islam instead of kufr, such as in Algeria. Having tried and rejected everything, Muslims have become clear about what was already in their hearts. The reality has dawned on them about what previously raised them to the level of the most powerful nation on Earth. This they have concluded was the implementation of Islam via its ruling system, the Khilafah. Without the implementation of Islam the Muslims realise they have no voice, no ability to fight, no representation, no rights and are nothing but pawns in the great game of nations. The West is now facing a world-wide Islamic revival, which not only threatens their material interests, but is challenging western civilisation in every aspect of life. Muslims are discovering Islam has solutions and viewpoints on all of life’s affairs. They are seeing clearly the cracks, faults and weaknesses in the man-made systems which have been forced upon them for so many years. They are beginning to challenge the West’s ability to ably look after the affairs of their own citizens. In these changing times, America and Britain know full well that the pro-western regimes that they had implanted in the Muslim world, which have served them faithfully for the past 80 years, are about to be swept away to make way for the Khilafah state. With this in mind, both America and Britain have decided to launch a pre-emptive strike to re-establish their political hegemony over the Islamic world by physically occupying Muslim countries and subjugating them to the tyranny of capitalist solutions. They wish to physically prevent the Muslims from grouping or calling for an Islamic solution in any of the Muslim lands. They wish to portray those sincerely working for Islamic revival as terrorists who need to be stopped and wiped out. But even this act of barbarism is bound to fail, as it represents a last ditch attempt by a drowning civilisation to save itself. Muslims in Britain out rightly reject this new wave of colonialism and will not be silenced. We want to rise to the challenge by proposing a debate with the intellectuals and thinkers in British society. That debate is whether western civilisation or Islam is a credible alternative for mankind?

The Americans are using armored thrusts into the city which is the only way to get in. It only works if the tanks keep moving and don't stop. If they stop, they get surrounded and are vulnerable. This works but it prevents you from doing the most critical thing - holding territory. The Americans have withdrawn twice now because they have not figured out how to hold the territory they "seize". And everything they have "seized" so far has been abandoned buildings - the palaces and Information Ministry have been abandoned for days or weeks because they were obvious airstrike targets. All the US is doing is shooting up Iraqi vehicles and gun emplacements - whittling down the Iraqi forces. The real test will come when the Iraqis are forced back into the narrow streets of the older sections of the city and the US casualties will rise as Iraqis learn to trap tanks at intersections, fire RPGs into the treads, and dump barrel of gasoline on them from the roofs while machine gun fire keeps the US troops heads down. Or, as I said elsewhere, maybe not...

It seems that the Americans have cut off Baghdad. While resistance is stiff, the American penetrations into the city have the tendency to wear down resistance. I see the tide of battle as with the US side, given the overwhelming logistical, military, and air power strengths. What is next? How long can the defenders of Baghdad hold out? Will most slip away into the civilian populace, thus letting the Americans take the city and be harrassed by relatively minor sniper and guerilla tactics, or will stiff resistance continue for some time? I'm sure the defenders of Baghdad are hoping for solidarity from the Arab world, but weak gestures from weak governments are not going to help the defenders. There is no mass uprisings in Arab cities, and this give the US more time to accomplish the task of taking the city. How long can those defenders hold out?
