East Timor: Australia Beefing Up, Extending Peacekeeping Contingent
                                        28 Jul-13:29

Prime Minister John Howard announced Friday that Australia's
1,500-strong peacekeeping contingent in East Timor would extend its
presence in the territory for an additional two years.

He also said Canberra was sending a reinforcement of 100
soldiers and four Black Hawk helicopters to East Timor but denied the
move was linked to the killing earlier this week of a New Zealand
peacekeeper by unidentified gunmen while on patrol along the border
with Indonesia.

The killing of the first peacekeeper since international forces
arrived in East Timor last September underlined, Howard added, that
it still was "not possible to control (anti-independence) militias in
some areas and that everyone should know that Australians face grave
danger in the zone."

The Sydney Morning Herald cited military sources Friday as
saying that the killers of the NZ soldier Monday was carried out by
the Laksaur militia group in return for a bounty of about euros 200.

The soldier's ears had been cut off as a "trophy of war," the
newspaper added.

In Dili, peacekeeping force spokesman Col. Brynjar Nymo said the
report could not be confirmed and that it was being treated by the
PKF as "simple rumors."

The firefight in which the peacekeeper was killed near Suai by
masked, heavily armed men was carried out in such a professional
manner that some sources in Dili have suggested it might have been
carried out by "out of control" Indonesian troops, rather than by
paramilitaries.
