The Nonviolent Peaceforce
You can help create an alternative to war.
Sponsor a peaceworker in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka Peacekeeping Project
In 2003, the Peaceforce launched a three-year pilot project in
Sri Lanka at the invitation of, and in partnership with, local
groups. Together, we are using proven nonviolent strategies
to help local peacemakers establish a grassroots foundation
for a lasting and just peace.
The conditions in Sri Lanka are ripe for the Peaceforce pilot
project because civilians of all ethnic backgrounds are tired
of the 19-year war that has claimed 65,000 lives, converted
children into soldiers, and littered their beautiful landscape
with land mines.
While a recent ceasefire and peace negotiations are already
underway at the diplomatic level, Sri Lankan peacemakers
view this as the opportune time to build the grassroots base
to sustain the ceasefire.
The objectives of the Peaceforce pilot project are to:
- Establish grassroots groundwork for sustainable peace to
complement diplomatic efforts underway.
- Reduce the level of and potential for violence and increase
the safety of civilians during the peace process.
- Increase the confidence and creativity of civilians as a
result of improving their safety.
- Increase the likelihood of peace with justice through civilian
participation.
What is the Nonviolent Peaceforce?
The Peaceforce is a "peace army" composed of trained civilians
from around the world. We apply research-based nonviolent
strategies to protect human rights, deter violence, and help
create space for local peacemakers to carry out their work.
Seven Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, 75 Member Organizations,
and thousands of people support the Peaceforce around the world.
"Coming from the Global South, from a country torn by post-war
conflict and in need of international presence and witnessing,
I believe that the energy and love that we use for our own
struggle can be shared in order to help build the dream of people
from all over the world working together to help each other in
times of acute conflict."
--Claudia Samayoa (Guatemala)
Nonviolent Peaceforce Co-Chair
How Does a Peaceworker Help?
The Peaceforce is recruiting and training a team of
50 civilians from around the world to support, protect, and
ampllify the work of local peacemakers in Sri Lanka.
The 50-member Peaceforce team will break out into smaller
units of 3 to 5 members. Each unit will work alongside
multi-ethnic PAFFREL staff in up to 16 volatile villages
and towns around the country.
Our peaceworkers will apply three proven methods of conflict transformation.
They will:
- Provide international protective presence.
- Accompany individuals and groups from all sides of the
conflict when they are at risk in peacekeeping activities.
- Monitor violations of human rights abuses and increases of
instability or conflict, and report on these as advised by
our local partners.
Why Does It Cost $29,900 to Support a Peaceworker for One
Year? The next few months are critical for the Peaceforce
project in Sri Lanka. You can help.
The total cost for the Peaceforce project in Sri Lanka is less
than the United States government spends on its military in
just two minutes. Yet, excluding the recruiting, training, and
administrative expenses, it still costs $29,900 per year to
support a peaceworker in the field.
We are looking for individuals and communities to sponsor
peaceworkers in Sri Lanka.
