Fraternal Order of Police and Philadelphia District Attorney's Office go Ballistic over Commencement Address

Philadelphia, PA. April 2, 2000. Mumia Abu-Jamal will give the commencement address at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio by audiotape on April 29, 2000. In a letter to Antioch College President Robert Devine, Philadelphia First Assistant District Attorney Arnold H. Gordon undermined the intelligence of college graduates, calling them "impressionable" and questioning their academic community's "sense of decency, no sense of what is right and what is wrong."
The Antioch Student Commencement Committee refuses to back down from their decision. Speaking on behalf of the committee, students Teishan Latner and Ross Fitdzgerald responded to the condemnation, stating, "Antioch students are highly educated about Mumia Abu-Jamal. We are highly educated by the state and we have absolute confidence in our decision to host Mumia for our key-note speaker at our graduation."
The Philadelphia District Attorney's office has requested that Antioch reconsider their invitation for Mumia to speak. District Attorney Lynne Abraham said, "...that well educated people should glorify the convicted killer of police officer Daniel Faulkner is repugnant and should be condemned by all right thinking Americans." As millions of people from around the world have insisted, Mumia Abu Jamal is innocent and never had a fair trial. In his trial the prosecution withheld exculpatory evidence and violated more than 22 of his constitutional rights.
The students at Antioch college declare they "have invited Mumia Abu-Jamal to speak at our commencement because his life and struggle have illuminated issues that are of great concern to our society, including widespread police brutality, rampant racism in the criminal justice system which has incarcerated more Black men than apartheid South Africa, and the increasing dependency on prison labor in this country."
Antioch college students' support for Mumia echo similar endorsements by students worldwide.
Kent State University Student Anti-Racist Action suggested Mumia Abu-Jamal as a speaker for this year's May 4th commemoration because of what Jamal represents and the connection between the death of the four Kent State students and his pending execution. "We bring Mumia to the commemoration as someone who, though subject to continuous repression for his skin color and politics, has spoken up against injustice loudly and clearly," Kent State students say. The graduates of Evergreen College who received Mumia's commencement address in 1999 received worldwide attention, as did the recently demonstrating students in Berlin, Germany where 8,000 people marched to the United States embassy.
On Monday, April 3, 2000 a coalition of youth and other concerned people in Philadelphia will hold a press conference to expose attacks on youth intelligence and the attempts of Philadelphia District Attorney Lynn Abraham and Fraternal Order of Police to prevent Mumia from communicating the truth to the youth of our country. Any one interested in free speech and the truth is welcome to attend our press conference.
The press conference will be held at 4:30 pm in front of the Fraternal Order of Police Building, 1336 Spring Garden Street at the intersection of Broad and Spring Garden.
