Solidarity Network with Migrants Japan

Our Goal is:
To protect migrants' rights, support their empowerment, and
create a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society in Japan.

By:
Networking with NGOs and individuals advocating migrants' rights
in Japan and coordinating collaborative activities while sharing
experiences and cooperating with one another.
 Activities

1. Advocacy

(1) Lobbying
We actively lobby at international conferences by:
Writing counter reports against Japanese government's reports on
International Covenants and sending delegates to the committees,
Writing reports to the follow-up conference of Beijing Women's
Conference, and
Sending delegates to the World Conference against racism.
We also lobby against the national government for opposing
revised immigration law, enacting the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, etc.

(2) Political advocacy
We are discussing a lot of issues to prepare a comprehensive policy for
foreign residents in Japan.

(3) Negotiations with governmental ministries and agencies

(4) Holding a rally on International Migrants' Day.
Campaigning for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Protection of
Migrant Workers and Their Families


2. Networking

For the sharing of information and experiences, and collaboration at international and national levels.

(1) National Forum
Organized by a local steering committee every other year. It includes a
panel discussion and group sessions for deeper discussion about various issues on migrants.

(2) Workshop
It enriches community movements with sharing experiences among NGOs and advocates for migrants' rights.

(3) Asian Networking
NNSMW affiliates with MFA (Migrant Forum in Asia, found in 1996), networks with AMC (Asian Migrant Center), JCMK(Joint Committee of Migrant workers in Korea), and other Asian regional organizations and international NGOs for sharing information, collaboration, and campaigning.
 
3. Publicity

(1) Migrants'- net
A pamphlet including subjects and information about migrant issues in
Japanese. Issued 10 times/year.

(2) Migrant Network News
An English newsletter for migrants. Issued 10 times/year.(〜spring edition,2004)

(3) Mailing list
A space for members to share information and opinions, questions and
answers. Full of fresh information on migrants.

(4) Home Page
Introducing activities of NNSMW, providing news and useful data in Japanese
and English
