Belleau Wood, Dubuque, Germantown called to duty

WHITE BEACH - Two-thousand Okinawa-based Marines trained in amphibious
landings, boat and helicopter raids and civilian evacuations are headed
to
the Persian Gulf along with 1,900 Sasebo-based sailors.
船舶やヘリによる奇襲・非戦闘員の避難などのための上陸訓練を受けた沖縄の海兵隊
員２０００名と、佐世保の海軍兵士１９００名がペルシャ湾に向かっている。
The Marines, from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, are aboard
the USS
Belleau Wood, the USS Germantown and the USS Dubuque. They left Okinawa's
White Beach Naval Port on Wednesday morning, said 31st MEU spokeswoman
1st
Lt. Kristen Lasica. She said the unit had not been given a specific
mission
and it was not known how long the sailors and Marines would stay in
the
Gulf.
第３１海兵遠征隊の隊員は、ベローウッド（揚陸強襲艦）・ジャーマンタウン・ド
ビューク（ドック型揚陸輸送艦）に乗り込み、水曜の朝、沖縄のホワイト・ビーチを
出港した。任務やペルシャ湾岸での滞在期間は明らかにされていない。
The ships are based at Sasebo Naval Base in southern Japan.

The ships were headed home to Sasebo last weekend after dropping
Marines
off here at the conclusion of Foal Eagle 98 exercises in Korea. But
the
ships were ordered to turn around and come back to Okinawa to prepare
for a
possible deployment. They began loading the Marines and their equipment
here
Monday, although they had not yet received orders to go to the Gulf
region.
これらの艦船はFoal Eagle 98を終えた海兵隊員をホワイト・ビーチで降ろしたあ
と佐世保に向かっていたが、（湾岸への）配備に備えて、急遽沖縄にとんぼ返りした

Those orders came Tuesday morning in Washington (Tuesday night
in Japan),
when Defense Secretary William Cohen announced that the aircraft carrier
USS
Enterprise from Norfolk, Va., and a Marine task force from Japan immediately
would set sail for the Persian Gulf.
ワシントン時間で火曜朝、コーエン国防長官がノフォークにいる空母エンタープラ
イズや日本に駐留する海兵隊のペルシャ湾への出動を明らかにしたことで、これらの
出港命令は発せられた。

The Marines are not the only Okinawa-based servicemembers deployed
to the
Gulf. Six F-15 fighters from Kadena Air Base left Nov. 1 to take part
in
Operation Northern Watch, enforcing the no-fly zone over northern Iraq.
They
are expected to be deployed for three months.
ペルシャ湾へ出動するのは沖縄の海兵隊だけではない。１１月１日にはイラク北部の
飛行禁止区域の監視のため嘉手納から６機のＦ−１５が出動した。期間は３か月にわ
たる模様。
