Japan Chernobyl Foundation (JCF) is a Japanese Non-Governmental Organization. We have cooperated with Shinshu University School of Medicine and other medical workers, and supported the Gomel regional hospital and other hospitals in Belarus for the treatment leukemia and cancer patients after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident since 1991.

Purpose: Medical support for Chernobyl
    (Achievement)
  1. Medical survey of thyroid cancer for the children in the area contaminated by the Chernobyl accident.

    Dr. Akira SUGENOYA (Right person), the Assistant professor of Shinshu University School of Medicine at that time, and staffs of Shinshu University hospital surveyed thyroid cancer with examination by touch. We recognized strongly that thyroid cancer was involved in Chernobyl.

  2. Medical analysis of blood about activity of NK (Natural Killer) cell among the population received in-corporated radiation.

    Dr. Kenichi KOIKE (Right person), the Assistant professor of Shinshu University School of Medicine, and staffs of Shinshu University hospital analyzed blood. They discovered that activity of NK cell (one of the immunologocal characters) was uncommon after the Chernobyl accident.

  3. Supply the necessary medical appliances and medicine at Gomel regional hospital and Chechersk district hospital.

    We have supplied a lot of medical appliances and medicine. Members of the Delegation usually have brought the supporting goods to Belarus. These are helpful for the treatment. Manabu HIROURA (Left person) and Takayuki OKUYAMA (Right person), the Japanese medical engineers, and experts of medical machine keep in repair our provided medical appliances.

  4. Doctors and medical workers of Shinshu University hospital and so on cooperate with doctors of Gomel regional hospital for the leukemia treatment (ex. auto-PBSCT; Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation).

    The immunological system is damaged by leukemia. For the prevention of oral infectious diseases, we introduced brushing their teeth to children in Belarus. We have cooperated widely, from PBSCT to prevention from infectious diseases, for leukemia treatment.

  5. Send 52 delegations of doctors, nurses and so on for 9 years.

    We have sent the delegation for medical cooperation since 1991. For the appropriate cooperation, our delegation has gone to see not only medical workers but also government officials. At 11th delegation, we met Mr. Vassili S. KAZAKOV (Left person), the Minister of Health, and talked about our program.

  6. Invite doctors and so on from Belarus, and training a new medical treatment.

    Dr. Tatyana Shimikihina(Center person), the Medical Doctor of Gomel regional hospital, came to Japan from Gomel, Belarus in order to study Japanese leukemia treatment in Shinshu University and other University School of Medicine. We have invited about 10 persons from Belarus since 1991.

  7. Culture exchange between Japan and Belarus.

    "Project May (21st delegation)" was held for not only medical cooperation but also cultural exchange in May 1994. Mr. Hiroshi KAIHARA (Left person), the Painter, took a children's likeness. Not only medical specialists but also artists and so on join JCF.

Programs:
  1. The medical cooperation for the children of leukemia in Gomel regional hospital.

    Dr. Michael Bogatchenko (Center person), the Medical Doctor of Gomel regional hospital, and medical workers of Gomel regional hospital operated auto-PBSCT (Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation) for leukemia children by themselves in Aug. 1998. We think we will cooperate with doctors of the Gomel regional hospital.

  2. Tele-medicine System for Chernobyl medical support.

    Dr. Masaomi TAKIZAWA (Right person), the Assistant professor of Shinshu University School of Medicine, and the Japanese medical specialists (doctors and medical engineers) confer with the Belarussian specialists about medical treatment of leukemia patients by Tele-medicine system. At the same time doctors can watch the Xray films and discuss each other.

  3. Supply medical materials for the operations of thyroid cancer.

    We have supplied medical materials to Thyroid cancer center. Dr. Yuri Demidchik (Center person), the Medical Doctor of Thyroid cancer center, and other doctors use the materials for the thyroid cancer patients. We think we will supply medical materials required.

  4. Culture exchange between Japan and Belarus. (Exhibition of pictures and Film.)

    Mr. Seiichi MOTOHASHI (Center person), the Director of the movie "Nadya's village", held exhibition of the movie in Nov. 1998 at Chechersk, Belarus. We think we will hold exhibition of pictures and Film like this after this.
