There is already a world wide movement that has identified the
principles for doing this and been working on it for 20 years.
However the deadline is unrealistic, except for individuals and small
communities.
We are offering a series of Y2K workshps for such, and for
neighboorhods, throughout this year, on the theme: Permaculture and
Y2K: Sustainable Design for Preparedness. These are based on our
established design principles for developing self-reliant habitation,
including preparing for various sorts of catastrophes. If Y2K turns
out to have catastrophic beginnings, they will be superimposed on
other situations such as bilzzards and ice storms in cold winter N
Hemisphere locations, floods, earthquakes, fire--the gamut of
catastrophes that continue anyway. Obviously, if socity is impaired
in dealing with such problems due to communication failures, they will
be much worse than otherwise. think of the cental american hurricane
of this past summer without any capability for international response,
for example.
While the goal to have global preparedness is exemplary, we are
working on a case by case training. We will also soon have a special
issue of our publication, THE INTERNATIONAL PERMACULTURE SOLUTIONS
JOURNAL, outlining the most important steps to be made.
Sustainability is not something that can be achieved instantly.
(Obviously, sustainability includes the capacity to avoid disruptions
such as communications failures and natural disasters.) However we
have many steps that can be taken toward sustainablity that will help
folks weather any problems that may ensue fromthe so-called Y2K bug.
These are reasonable steps to take in any case, and help launch folks
toward a sustainable habitation with or without the Y2K bug being a
factor in our lives on 1/1/00.
