Glickman prediction

The Glickman prediction that Y2K will not disrupt food supplies has
provoked 3 types of posted responses on grounds of: (A) politics
(Laurence Victor, interdoc-y2k 231); (B) morality (mine, interdoc-y2k
233); and (C) practicality (Christian Murray, interdoc-y2k 236). Of
these, I now feel that my own stance on morality is the least
effective, given that morality is politically seen as subordinate to
economic well-being. More effective is the political pressure to
"fire Glickman" and all the glickmen (plural/symbolic) in the team of
Philippine President Estrada. Most effective is intelligent debate
undertaken by Christian Murray.

But intelligent debate is also the most difficult in the Philippines
because it requires information that is hard to find, due to the
market-orientation of media and due to the blind instinct for
self-preservation among the glickmen.

Glickmen know what is happening and why, but most Filipinos don't.
The glickmen will be held accountable by the many who are not being
told and who will eventually discover why they are not being told.
But they will not ape the riots seen on cable-TV. In Bathala they
trust to give them their daily rice.
