weeklong Cultural Prog., Rally, Stall, Meeting, Micking"

Press Release

Nari Unnayan Shakti (NUS) is a woman development organisation
observed World AIDS Day'2001 through weeklong activities in a
befitting manner. Cultural Program, Rally, Stall with product
produced by Commercial Sex Workers, Orientation Meeting,
Micking, develop and distribute behaviour change communication
materials was the major of the program. About 3000 NUS's
staffs, Rickshawpullars, community women, Commercial Sex
Workers and youth students have spontaneously participated at
the program.

Since 1993, Nari Unnayan Shakti is conducting AIDS prevention
program since 1993 among 10,000 people in different districts
of Bangladesh. Among them Commercial Sex Workers and their
clients (Rickshawpullars and their families) and South
Students are the High Risk People for AIDS.

Women are 10 times vulnerable than man towards STD and AIDS
(Ref: Women and AIDS-WHO). In this situation to protect women
>from this deadly disease, we need to address the women's
problems in these regards. No women are working in the policy
making of health department, GOB like Joint Secretary,
Secretary. All of the policy makers are not gender sensitised.
NUS believe women's participation in policy making will give a
hope in this respect.

To integrate the gender issue in the NGOs and the government's
programme and project level NUS is conducting this advocacy
work with the GO/NGO health policy makers. To sensitise policy
makers in the Government and Non-government NUS conducted
several Brain Storming Sessions, one to one dialogue and a
daylong seminar with different policy level stakeholder
