IWTC WOMEN'S GLOBALNET #176
Initiatives and Activities of Women Worldwide
By Anne S. Walker and Vicki J. Semler

August 30, 2001

UPDATE ON GENDER AT THE WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST RACISM

UN World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia
and Related Intolerance (WCAR), Durban, South Africa, 28 August-7
September, 2001.

Following up on Women's Globalnet #175, (see IWTC website at
www.iwtc.org) which gave background, plans and preparations for WCAR,
this issue has been prepared with those of us who are unable to be in
Durban in mind, and includes many avenues whereby women worldwide can
keep in touch. It is a compilation of information that has come to us
from various women's groups and from WomenAction participants who are in
Durban posting news and bulletins to both the WomenAction website
(http://www.womenaction.org> and to their own websites.

A. KEEPING ABREAST OF WOMEN'S ACTIVITIES AT WCAR:

1.Daily Live Webcasts by FIRE (Feminist International Radio Endeavour):
FIRE invites you to participate in the "FIRE-PLACE" August 28-Sept. 7,
2001 through its webpage at: <http://www.fire.or.cr>. Featuring women
from around the world talking about racism, FIRE will broadcast daily
programmes from the WomensNet CyberCafe in Spanish, English and
Portuguese under the title "Voices Without Brackets." Listeners may also
participate in a "chat room" during the broadcasts. Programmes will
focus on a variety of topics, including: Women's access to media and new
communication technologies; gender and sexual identity; media and
racism; intersections of globalization with gender, race and class;
Filipina migrant women's issues; Caribbean women and 500 years of
racism; young ethnic Australian women on using art to explore racism and
xenophobia. For more information, write to FIRE at e-mail:
femintra@hotmail.com or check their webpage at: <http://www.fire.or.cr>.

2. WomensNet Cybercafe: FIRE journalists report that "the large room on
the third floor of Cricket Stadium is packed with more than 60
computers, all occupied by activists, journalists and other
communicators writing news articles to send back home to their countries
about the first day of the NGO Forum at WCAR now underway in Durban,
South Africa." The article goes on to say that Womensnet CyberCafe is
the first Internet caftotally organized and run by women at a UN World
Conference and that the host (WomensNet), is an African women's
organization focused on training women in the use of new information
technologies for social change.

3. Intersections: Covering Gender at the WCAR NGO Forum, Durban 2001.
This bulletin will be produced every two days by WomenAction
participants at the NGO Forum, led by WomensNet and APC-Africa Women. It
will be printed and available online at:
<http://www.apc.org/intersections/>

B. SITES FOR REVIEWING BACKGROUND PAPERS AND DEBATES:

1. Isis International/Manila WCAR Activities: A special section of the
Isis website (http://www.isiswomen.org) compiles information and
documents arising from NGO and official meetings leading up to WCAR. In
addition to this, the Isis bulletin entitled We!, which is issued in
both electronic (weekly) and printed (monthly) versions, has a special
section called "WCAR Watch." It features important articles, debates and
other initiatives of governments and NGOs around WCAR issues. To

Isis is also facilitaing a special gender and racism listserve called

Durban and commentaries on some of the preparatory work done in
different parts of the world by DAWN members. "Dawn Informs" can be
