Mid-Term Review of the Decade for HRE - Invitation to participate

Dear friends,

You may know that the year 2000 marks the half-way point into the Decade
for Human Rights Education (1005-2004). The Office of the UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights has been mandated, in cooperation with all
partners, to carry out a mid-term review of the Decade in terms of
progress, needs, shortcomings and achievements experienced during its
first five years.

Two outcomes are envisaged from this exercise. A database of human rights
education programmes, materials and resources will be compiled by the
Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)
and made available through its website. In addition, an analytical report
will be submitted to the General Assembly, at its forthcoming session
starting in September.

We would like to invite all of you, partners in human rights education, to
participate in this undertaking. Related questionnaires to be filled in
(for those who did not receive them already in hard copy) are available in
English, French and Spanish on OHCHR's website (address: www.unhchr.ch).
The questionnaires should be returned to the Office of the High
Commissioner for Human Rights, completed as explained in the technical
annex (also available on the website), by 20 July 2000.

I would like to encourage all of you, human rights educators from various
countries and organizations, to take this opportunity to make your voice
heard at the United Nations and to further disseminate information about
your activities.

With my best regards, Elena

Elena Ippoliti
