Message from John Suresh (Chennai, India, AHI ILDC participant in 2004)
1. Dear friends, Hearty greetings! I am John Suresh from India. Do you remember me? I was in Japan during 5th Sept 04 to 12th Oct 04 attended ILDC training in AHI, Nissin, Aichi. During that time I have met you. How is winter in Japan now? I hope it is quite bearable. Friends, our place Tamil Nadu
became a major victim of Tsunami, which occurred on 26th Dec 04. Fishermen
have borne the brunt of the waves our state. Dozens of their colonies
were swept away without trace as the giant waves turned into watery graves
for the men who eked out a living by the sea. The victims lost their homes,
their loved ones, their property and every little thing they had when
the tsunami lashed the shores of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. But what they now
have is the support and affection of people They have not only lost lives, but also their livelihood. No doubt, the demands made on civilian authorities in times like these are enormous, but quite inexplicably some of the villages in Tamil Nadu were untouched by relief operations more than 48 hours after the tsunami slammed the shore. Although the most devastating of the seismic sea waves came and went within 30 minutes, leaving the coast relatively calm and secure thereafter, government agencies were slow to reach some of the fishing hamlets in Nagapattinam and Kanyakumari districts. It is evident that politicians were keener on winning brownie points for meeting the aggrieved sections than on concerted action to bring effective relief. It is time to coordinate efforts, pool resources and enable the affected families to build a roof for shelter and get their boats and catamarans repaired. A majority of the victims are fisherfolk, and they must be steadfastly helped to resume their livelihood and rebuild their lives. With food, drink, sanitation, shelter and healthcare urgently needed in Tamil Nadu, relief effort was under way. We would appreciate if you could contribute as much as you can to the affected people in India. We hereby attach the relevant information for your kind help and support to the needy. Yours sincerely, R.T.John Suresh,
