This is to inform you on the latest disaster in Indonesia, the country's worst disaster since the 2004 tsunami.

An earthquake under the Indian Ocean of 5.9 Magnitude (6.2 M according to United States Geological Survey, USGS) happened on Saturday, 27 May 2006 05:46 a.m. local time (Friday, 26 May 2006 09:46 p.m. GMT). The epicentre was 33 km under the sea and 25 km south-west of Yogyakarta, 440 km south-east of Jakarta, a popular tourist destination and historic royal metropolis that sits near the Indian Ocean. The quake was felt across the Central and Eastern Java, with aftershocks reported.

Yogyakarta is near the Mount Merapi volcano, which threatened to erupt earlier this month, forcing thousands of people evacuated. The quake also appears to have triggered increased activity in the region's Merapi volcano. The hot, dense gas cloud, which locals call "shaggy goats" came out of the volcano after the quake, stretched 4 km down the mountainside. People who have been living in fear of the volcano eruption for weeks are very much still on edge.

Southern coast of Indonesia's Java Island shook and rippled through heavily populated regions in Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces killing at least 5,135 persons and injured more than 5,000 persons. The most devastated district is Bantul, 15 km south of the City of Yogyakarta, where at least 2,388 persons killed and 80% of buildings and houses destroyed. Casualties in the City of Yogyakarta are 129 deaths, District of Kulonprogo 15, District of Gunungkidul 40 and District of Sleman 174. Within the province of Central Java, 806 persons were killed in the District of Klaten, 3 persons in District of Boyolali were killed. The real number of the death toll is presumably higher since people have taken their relatives' bodies and buried them before could be tallied. The dead had generally suffered from head injuries and broken bones from collapsing buildings. There are fears that many people are trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Health providers and hospitals have been overwhelmed and casualty figures are expected to rise. Injured people were pouring into Yogyakarta hospitals. People were ferried to the hospitals in lorries, trucks and buses or made the journey on foot because of a shortage of ambulances. There are not enough doctors, rooms and medical supplies to cope with the number injured. Doctors struggle to care for hundreds of injured people lying on plastic sheets, straw mats and even newspapers outside the overcrowded hospitals. Some hooked to intravenous drips dangling from trees. Many of the injured were being attended in the hospital alleys and parking lots.

Because of afully of hospital services day by day, much injured people referales to otu of Yogyakarta City, such Solo and some in Purworejo City and some in Magelang City.

Road and bridges are heavily damaged, hardening efforts to get the injured to hospitals. Some of the telephone lines were cut, and in some areas cellular communications were also knocked down. The quake also levelled and damaged thousands of houses; school, business and government buildings. City airport's runway was cracked and part of a roof had caved in. Relief flight had to be diverted to nearby cities, Semarang and Solo. Prambanan temples were heavily damaged. At least 40,000 houses were destroyed and around 50,000 persons have to live in tents, mosques, churches and on the open fields.

Base on our assessment today, especially on Gunuk Manuk Salam Village, Patuk District, Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta Province, 77 families consists of 500 persons with 23 children live in temporary tents, and till now no Government support reach this place. Every day rain especially in evening. Some bad health conditions rise such are: injured, cough, distress, skin problem, breathing problems and influenza. Today under rainy we support this area with simple noodle, rice, temporary tents, oil and litle money but not enough yet. We in position get local support by collected unused clothes and rice, we hopes this week we can support them again.

Obstacles
Obstacles faced on the field are: scattered points of the survivors, communication and unavailability of relief commodities in the local markets. The commodities have to be purchased in Magelang (50 km), Solo (80 km) and Semarang (200 km).

There are recent situations, such are: Until now estimated more than 5,000 persons pass away because local evacuation unfinished yet on Yogyakarta area and parts of Central Java (Klaten City, Solo City), Ppart of East Java Province (Pacitan City). Especially on Southern of Yogyakarta (Bantul Regency, 95% of the building damaged) which more peoples pass away, the situation looks like Nias and Aceh. The hospital in Yogyakarta City a fully of injured peoples, much peoples get treatments in out of hospital rooms such are, yards, trotoirs. Infrasctructure damages, electricitity die, telecommunication system damages, the peoples stay and life at streets under "temporary tents". They needs health cares, tents and foods also water. Yogyakarta is popular city and acceptable in many places, in this situations Yogyakarta more exposes and publicates by local news rather than other places, it is will make Yogyakarta gets take attentions rather than other damaged places. We will fucoses response in these areas.

In this situation with permission from you, can I ask you would you like to expanse your Tsunami program to Yogyakarta and Central Java on emergency responses? Actualy we shame asking it, since I see that AHI programs is for 2004 Tsunami accidents. We appreciates of your response, any way.
Thanks so much.

With solidarity,
